In an enlightening tidbit shared on the airwaves, Dave Rennie inadvertently disclosed the host cities for the All Blacks' upcoming Rugby Championship clashes against the Springboks. The iconic rugby nations are set to face off in Auckland and Christchurch, a revival of their storied rivalry slated for next year, with the Springboks defending their championship title.
The official announcement from SANZAAR regarding the venues and fixtures remains pending. However, the back-to-back World Champions, the Springboks, are confirmed to travel to New Zealand, engaging in two fiercely contested matches just weeks after the Super Rugby Pacific finals. This development marks a significant calendar event, contrasting sharply with this year's Rugby Championship, which was put on hold to facilitate the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.
Rennie, in his conversation with Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking, elaborated on the scheduling, "We play each other twice in July as well, straight after the Super Rugby final, like two weeks later. We play them again in Auckland and Christchurch." This strategic scheduling sets the stage for potential World Cup quarter-final previews, assuming both teams top their pools.
"We are going to play them a lot leading up to the World Cup. Look, I think their side may look a tad different, but I think the nucleus will be the same and how they play the game will still be pretty similar," Rennie noted.
The Rugby Championship is set to return in full swing in 2027, following a brief hiatus. The tournament will feature each team playing the others twice, fostering a competitive atmosphere ahead of the World Cup commencing in October.
Highlighting the tournament's structure, the first match featuring New Zealand versus South Africa is expected to light up Eden Park in Auckland on July 10th; simultaneously Australia will contend with Argentina in Sydney. The following weekend, Christchurch's newly minted One NZ Stadium will welcome the Springboks, marking their first match in the city since their 2016 encounter, which saw the All Blacks triumph 41-13.
In other notable fixtures, Australia and New Zealand will renew their historic rivalry with the Bledisloe Cup, slated for an Anzac Day showdown in Sydney—the first of its kind in the storied 123-year history of these fixtures. Moreover, the Wallabies are scheduled to play host to the second Bledisloe Cup match on July 31st, followed by their face-off against the All Blacks a week later.
As the Rugby Championship unfolds, each venue and match date beyond the initial rounds remain to be confirmed, keeping fans and players alike on the edge of their seats. In preparation for the home World Cup, Rugby Australia unveiled a robust lineup of matches featuring encounters against Argentina, New Zealand, and South Africa in sequence.
With the stage set for another exhilarating Rugby Championship, the anticipation is palpable, as each team sharpens their strategies and skills in pursuit of glory on the global stage. Fans worldwide are gearing up for thrilling matches that not only promise high-octane rugby but also potentially preview the tactical contests expected at the upcoming World Cup.
