Let's see if we can list the best like-for-like replacement for the returning guys. In other words, not players who are good in that position but rather players that can do the specific job the current incumbent does.

For example, Cam isn't a like for like swap for Wiese, even though one could argue, though i wouldn't, that he's a better 8 over all.

We're looking for players that can do the thing the current incumbent does best at a similar level.

I've only listed players that will retire immediately or soon after the RWC and/or who for whom replacements have not yet been confirmed.

Ox - Nobody I can think of
Marx - Wessels
Wilco - Nobody I can think of
Eben - Kobus Wiese
PSDT - Cam(Can do the same and more)
Kolisi - Roos
Wiese - Ruan Venter(The only player in SA that runs into traffic more successfully than Wiese. Yet we've not seen him at Test level)
DDA/AE - Nobody I can think of unless a flanker, or Roos, is converted)
Kriel - Hooker
Kolbe - Maybe, big maybe, Jooste. Yes, Rooi, Gili did come to mind and let's see what he does this year.

1 is a major concern. Ox is easily the foundation upon which all our success is currently built. For me, that much is abundantly clear. I actually can't see anybody coming in and having the success and impact that he has.

3 is also a problem. Wilco is immovable at tighthead and I also can't think of anyone that is gonna come in and provide the stability that he does. Keep in mind, we're talking about somebody that can come in a do it for at least five years.

12 I don't think what DDA does is extremely special, but we have zero test quality 12s in any of our URC sides. Not a single one, and AE will retire soon after DDA too. Yes, some here like Willemse, but the mandate is to find players that do what the current incumbent does, not simply guys that we think will be good in that position.

Marx will leave big shoes to fill but I think that Wessels can get close'ish to Marx. He'll probably never reach Marx's level though.

We're never gonna find anybody that does what Eben does. That's simply not gonna happen so in his position we are simply looking for a good 4. I'd go with Kobus Wiese and only because he looks like a bouncer from Welkom and we know that if rugby didn't exist Eben would be standing outside a nightclub in Cape Town right now.

In summary, I guess, if we are able to find good front row replacements and then also a like for like swap for DDA/AE then Rassie will be able to continue to play Rassie ball.

However, what if we can't find a front row as dominant? Suddenly we don't have the dominant scrums and that makes us more circumspect about highballs because knockons won't provide the advantage they have of late. Teams will be able to run the ball even more against us because once Ox and Wilco are gone the Bok scrum might very well simply be a restart at that point.

Again, we are looking for like-for-like replacements. And we are doing that because we are assuming that between 2027 and 2031 Rassie will not want to change how the Boks play. And we base that on the fact that since 2018 the Boks have never changed how they play so it's most likely that they won't suddenly switch up and will instead continue along the same path.

Who are your picks/suggestions?

I fancy Grobbies more than the ball tickler as a Marx replacement

Cobus Wiese looks likely for Eben. We have a lot of good locks but it's hard to tell who will successfully make the step up to test rugby.

Agree on Cam, Ruan Venter will solve some problems. Paul Div is fine for Kolisi I think, depending on what you want. He's not as abrasive a carrier but we can use 7 for that and enjoy the benefits of Div's jackling prowess, something we've never had in a regular Bok 6 or 7 pretty much since Rassie took over. With Div/Cam/Venter suddenly we'll have a loose trio that can menace the breakdowns.

I'd prefer Hooker at 12 if he goes midfield. He just didn't impress at 13 for the Sharks, but then the Sharks was so disjointed it's hardly a surprise. Moodie is still a solid option for 13 too, and there's Henco who's being criminally underrated in my opinion. 12 is our issue. I don't share the Willemse hype, for me he's 15 and done, so Hooker is where I'd look right now. Let's check the URC, see how guys like Janco Purchase and Bronson comes on, whenever Bronson is back. If all else fails there's Temu 12 - The Knife, The Unlikely Assassin, The Tawwenaai Killer, The Stringbean Slingshot, The Sinew of Destruction.

Edwill is pretty handy, no Kolbe but he's a solid tackler and excellent pace. Jooste has to be on the radar though.

Gielie looks an excellent prospect, we'll have to see how he shapes up physically. No room to hide in test rugby. Can he do a Kolbe when there's nothing between a big 7 and the tryline except him?

@Plum

Not necesarily - but he h as never showed it in matches, He is halfwat to Sloth Alberts - the must useless 7 SA ever had, Too slow to be part pf backline atacks - to and nev er ever protect breakdoiwn balls leave alone making turnovers at breakdowns.

If loosies are an eztension of the Ti ght 5 - t hey lo/se 50% o/f t heir value in teama.

But then I believe in 15 man rugby - mist site membr believe in 10 man rugby.

What I do know is that Sinew of Destruction is very near to knocking low-born slut off of its long held pedestal.

Ox - Mchunu/Kai Pratt possibly
Marx - AHV/Wessels/Grobbelaar
Wilco - Corne Waibach signed by Saracens possibly.
Eben - Cobus Wiese/ Adre' Smith
PSDT - Ruan Venter/ Riley Norton / Reinhardt Ludwig
Kolisi - Paul de Villiers
Wiese - Cameron Hanekom is the kinda 8 we need going forward.

Your examples don’t even line up:

Cameron Hanekom is not a like‑for‑like for PSDT. Cam is primarily an 8 and openside flank. PSDT is a lock converted to blindside. Completely different roles.

Wiese and Marco van Staden?? They are not similar in any meaningful way. Van Staden should not be starting for the Boks again, and he doesn’t have Jasper’s penetration or physicality.

Franco and Nortje are closer, yes, I’ll give you that. But they’re still different. Franco is the more specialised line‑out jumper, Nortje brings more grunt in the tight.

That’s exactly my point ... “like‑for‑like” never means identical. It means similar role, different strengths. By that logic, Hanekom absolutely qualifies as a like‑for‑like option at 8, even if he’s not a Jasper clone.

And there’s also nothing wrong with a renewal of strategy. The more you add to your strategies, the better off you are. Especially with Rassie putting so much emphasis on versatility. Being able to play the same role in different ways makes a side more adaptable, not weaker.

I say again: If your “like‑for‑like” rule only accepts carbon copies, then it’s not a useful rule at all, because no two players are the same.

It’s obvious, Plum, you’re just trying to stir shit with me specifically. But at the end of the day, you can’t even keep your own rules straight. So save it, man.

@Mpower M, when you are losing at Monopoly, do you get your wallet out and try to buy Hotels with real money?

Why not?

Surprised to read this from you...my sentiment exactly...DdA will never be the ideal 12, but he's a solid enough over the years...good enough to do the job.
