The Stormers have taken a significant step to bolster their scrumhalf options by securing a six-month loan for André Warner. The seasoned player joins from the Seattle Seawolves, a Major League Rugby team, as a part of a collaborative agreement. At age 32, Warner brings a wealth of experience back to the Cape Town-based club, having previously played for the Bulls, Stormers, and Stade Français before his stint in the United States.
Warner has already been integrating with the Stormers during the Seawolves' off-season, participating in training sessions and preparing for the upcoming competitions. His loan extends through February, offering the Stormers added depth in the scrumhalf position during this period.
Stormers' director of rugby, John Dobson, commented on Warner's impact since his arrival.
"André has been really impressive since joining up with us in pre-season. He has been a consistent performer for many years, and you can see why in the professionalism he brings."
Dobson also highlighted the timely nature of Warner’s arrival, noting the team's recent challenges with injuries in the scrumhalf role.
"We have had some injuries at scrumhalf, so to be able to bring a player like André in is hugely helpful."
In addition to his on-field prowess, Warner's return to the Stormers is seen as a boon for the younger talent within the club. His experience and skill set are viewed as instrumental for nurturing emerging players.
"He showed his worth in our pre-season match in Paarl and will also be able to help develop some of the exciting young players in our system as well," Dobson added, underscoring Warner’s dual role as a player and mentor within the squad.
As the United Rugby Championship season progresses, the Stormers are keen to make up for lost time and turn their fortunes around, hoping that strategic additions like Warner can spark a turnaround in performance.
