Bongi Mbonambi, the seasoned Springbok hooker, may be facing a potential career hiccup at the Sharks due to a disciplinary issue reportedly linked to alleged misconduct. This development stems from an incident during a team-building event prior to their match against the All Blacks on August 11.
The Sharks' management is deliberating over the fate of the 35-year-old after months of disciplinary hearings. A ruling is anticipated within the forthcoming two weeks, as per a report from Rapport. The controversy began during a pre-season gathering at the Bayala Private Safari Lodges where Mbonambi allegedly breached team rules.
Coach JP Pietersen had explicitly set boundaries for the team, allowing players time to socialize on a Tuesday evening but expected full focus when training resumed on Wednesday. Despite this, it’s reported that Mbonambi, along with Trevor Nyakane and Eduan Swart, extended their social activities into the following morning, even after Pietersen’s intervention.
Mbonambi’s situation is slightly more precarious as he had been present at the meeting where the rules were communicated. In contrast, Nyakane’s potential for a less severe reprimand stems from his absence at that meeting. Meanwhile, fellow hooker Fez Mbatha and Swart have already been subjected to disciplinary hearings and received written warnings, considering these were their first offenses.
The ongoing inquiry has sidelined Mbonambi from team activities, despite being physically fit to play. When queried about the hooker's absence, Pietersen simply stated, “Bongi is obviously not available. There is no comment on Bongi.” This situation casts a shadow over Mbonambi's availability for the upcoming Springboks’ November tests against Italy, Ireland, and France.
Mbonambi’s recent troubles are compounded by a hiatus from play since January 17, primarily due to knee and back issues, with his last Test match appearance dating back to a game against Wales in Cardiff on November 25 of the previous year.
This disciplinary issue not only affects Mbonambi's immediate future with the Sharks but also places his role in the national team under speculation, potentially impacting the player's career trajectory significantly.
