The Flying Fijians are rolling out the big guns for their Nations Championship debut this Saturday against Wales in Cardiff, headlined by the return of star centre Semi Radradra. After an 18-month hiatus, Radradra’s comeback is a major boost for the island nation. Joining him in the spotlight is rookie prop Tim Hoyt, who is poised to make his first Test start in a significantly bolstered Fijian lineup.
Acting head coach Senirusi Seruvakula has crafted a formidable squad, with Radradra and dynamic loose forward Peceli Yato, set to come off the bench, expected to make substantial impacts. The inclusion of young Hoyt, following Luke Tagi’s absence, is particularly noteworthy. Seruvakula expressed confidence in Hoyt's readiness for the international stage, attributing his selection to impressive performances in the French leagues.
“Hoyt has been showing good signs with his performances in France, and that provided him with this opportunity,”
Seruvakula noted. The team is captained by hooker Tevita Ikanivere and sees Frank Lomani orchestrating the game from scrumhalf, with Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula as his halfback partner. The midfield duo of Josua Tuisova and Radradra promises explosive runs, while Jiuta Wainiqolo and Selestino Ravutaumada add speed on the wings. Salesi Rayasi rounds out the backline at fullback.
The pack is no less impressive with Pita-Gus Sowakula, Kitione Salawa Jnr, and Elia Canakaivata manning the back row. The bench is packed with talent, featuring veterans like Peni Ravai and the versatile Vilimoni Botitu, promising a deep well of strength as the game progresses.
Despite the logistical challenges of assembling a team from players based around the globe, Seruvakula is optimistic about their prospects.
“The selection was difficult given the quality available, but I believe we have assembled the right squad to make a strong start to the Nations Championship,”
