Saffas Shine: Leyds, Du Preez Score in Victories

Over the weekend, South African players showcased their skills on international stages, delivering notable performances in both the French Top 14 and the English Premiership. Among the standout moments were tries by Dillyn Leyds and Dan du Preez for their respective clubs.

In France's Top 14, Dillyn Leyds, the former Stormers wing, was instrumental in La Rochelle's convincing 38-13 victory over Clermont, crossing the white line in the first half. Meanwhile, in Bordeaux, substitute flank Tiaan Jacobs entered the fray to help Bordeaux Bègles secure a dominant 51-28 triumph against Lyon, where former Eastern Province lock Janse Roux was on the starting roster for Lyon. Vannes, however, weren't as fortunate, with tighthead prop Nick Schonert featuring in a narrow 43-40 defeat to Pau.

The action in the English Premiership also had its fair share of South African influence. Bath, under the direction of coach Johann van Graan, edged out Exeter Chiefs 40-34. Dan du Preez, playing at No. 8, was pivotal, scoring one of Bath's tries in the first half. His fellow countrymen, loose forward Jaco Coetzee and midfielder Bernard van der Linde, also played crucial roles in the victory.

Elsewhere, Gloucester recorded a resounding 48-0 win over Harlequins, with Springbok lock Jean Kleyn and replacement loosehead prop Dian Bleuler contributing to the shutout. Harlequins had fullback Tyrone Green and tighthead prop Simon Kerrod as substitutes in the match. Another notable game saw the Leicester Tigers clinch a close 24-19 victory against the Newcastle Red Bulls, thanks to former Maritzburg College hooker Corbin Thunder.

In a more tightly contested match in London, Sale Sharks managed a 21-17 win against Saracens. Sale's lock Ernst van Rhyn and No. 8 Jacques Vermeulen were instrumental, despite Vermeulen receiving a red card in the first half.

This series of games not only highlighted the impact South African players are having abroad but also emphasized their critical roles in key victories and performances across major European leagues.
