In a recent Test match in Perth, a communication failure led to a bizarre scene where referee Andrea Piardi had to use a cellphone to connect with the TMO, drawing sharp criticism from rugby luminaries Steve Hansen and Nick Mallett. This incident unfolded during a review-heavy game between the Wallabies and Springboks.
Steve Hansen expressed his frustration on the Rugby Unity podcast, emphasizing the absurdity of the situation. "We had Mr Telecom out there with his phone," Hansen remarked. "Like, surely in today's world, we can get the little things right."

Hansen, the former All Blacks coach who led the team to their 2015 World Cup victory, also voiced concerns over the disciplinary measures affecting the game's competitiveness. The match saw Australia reduced to 11 players after receiving four yellow cards in the last 12 minutes.
"How can we allow a game to degenerate because of head knocks? Now, I would understand if they were straight-out swinging arms or deliberate, but not one of them was," Hansen argued. "One of the charters of the game is to have a fair contest. Well, it’s not a fair contest at 11 people versus 15. It’s just ridiculous. It’s embarrassing to watch it."
Despite his criticisms, Hansen absolved Piardi of blame, pinpointing the issue on the game's disciplinary protocols rather than the referee's decisions.
Nick Mallett, speaking on the Talking Boks podcast, also chimed in on the challenges faced by Piardi during the match. He sympathized with the referee's difficult position, caught in a significant Test match without direct communication with his TMO.
Mallett, a former coach of the Springboks, lambasted the technological shortcomings that led to such a predicament, especially considering the advancements in communication technology. This was not the first instance of communication issues in recent games, as similar problems surfaced during the Springboks' recent Test against the All Blacks in Baltimore.
"It’s ridiculous with communications and technology being as good as they are now in the world; you should never have a situation in an international game where the referee has to use a cellphone to talk to his TMO. That’s ridiculous."
