Stuart Barnes, the former England flyhalf, has made a bold assertion in the UK Sunday Times following the Springboks' convincing 3-1 series win over the All Blacks. He argues that overcoming the Boks in the upcoming 2027 World Cup will require a team led by a player as talented as Ardie Savea or Antoine Dupont.
Barnes praised the strategic depth of what he calls Rugby's Greatest Rivalry, noting the tactical duel between the direct, physically imposing play of the South Africans and the space-exploiting style of the New Zealanders. He lauded players like Kurt-Lee Arendse, Damian Willemse, and Cheslin Kolbe for their agility and Ethan Hooker for his aerial prowess, while noting Damian de Allende's consistently solid gainline advances.
However, Barnes highlighted that Ardie Savea's ability to deviate from the set game plan was pivotal in the initial tests. Despite New Zealand's tactical framework, it was Savea's flair that distinguished him.
