Ex-Springbok center Gcobani Bobo vocalized that the Stormers must recalibrate their tactical approach to reclaim their former glory in the United Rugby Championship (URC). According to Bobo, since their victory in the inaugural 2021-22 URC season, the team's strategic execution has waned.
During a URC media roundtable, Bobo emphasized the need for transformation within the team's mindset to return to their championship form.
"I think there needs to be a massive mindset change,” Bobo said. “If you think about the Stormers when they won the competition, it’s the balance they had in their game.”
Bobo highlighted that the team's initial success was grounded in their versatile approach to the game, seamlessly switching between forward power and backline finesse.
He pointed out that in recent seasons, the Stormers have struggled to maintain the strategic diversity that once made them formidable. Their inability to stick to a disciplined kicking game was a particular point of critique.
The team, blessed with X-factor talents like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Markus Muller, and Cheslin Kolbe, needs to develop a more systematic gameplay where the collective effort overshadows individual prowess.
"They do have individual stars, but I would love to see the Stormers not needing to use their stars, but using the way they set up their stars to shine,” he explained.
Bobo's vision for the team involves refining their attacking shape and consistency, ensuring that playmakers and runners are effectively synchronized in their roles.
The Stormers, aware of their past strengths and present challenges, are currently gearing up to tackle imminent threats, including their well-prepped opponents, Connacht.
As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if the Stormers heed Bobo's advice and pivot towards a more balanced and disciplined play style that could potentially lead them to another URC title.
