Willemse is a class act regardless of where he is on the field

Kolbe was as good as ever and Hooker confirmed he is a test star in the making - the sooner we see him at centre the better

The 4th test saw Arendse back to his best

Jessie had his moments, de Allende was very good in the last two tests

Sacha steadily got better each game - not completely firing but getting there

Manie was good but defensively frail

vd Bergh was what we needed at 9 after the pedestrian, indecisive showings by Reinach who simply has to be put out to pastures

The props had their moments with Ox as ever standing tall.

Marx was colossal - easily player of the series

Fourie off the bench was a flop - poor throw in’s and conceding that penalty attempting a turnover sealed that. Get a proper hooker on the bench

Eben was huge as ever, Lood was a huge improvement physically on Nortje and proved why we would be better served with a proper lock at 5. I’m not convinced by Nortje at all

Siya was good and de Villiers showed he has a bright future at test level.

PSDT was below his usual high standards - missed a few tackles, some being poor reads

Wiese was huge - massive physical presence

Hanekom is pure class he needs far more game time at the highest level

I thought Fourie being made captain once Siya and PSDT had left the field was a slap in the face to Eben

Great performance by the Boks after conceding the first tesr and getting better and better with each outing

Will be interesting to see what team Rassie sends to Oz, will it be the Baltimore boys or the younger brigade?

Dave I posted a video showing that Deon was taken off the ball by a side entry from a wee ab. Deon had his hands on the ball and would definitely have won a turnover.
Deon was possibly made captain to honor him. This guy was overlooked in his prime years through sheer blindness as to how good he was. Whether he goes the RWC next year remains to be seen.
Du Toit played 80 minutes 4 tests in a row as did Nortje. Like Du Toit he has a big engine and great work rate. I think Lood will replace Eben. Lood had a good test. But pairing Eben and Lood is great as long as it's wise to play these guys 80 minutes. Given Eben age I wonder if it is. Maybe in vital matches. Eg quarter finals against we abs next year in RWC.
Cheslin is a truly great player. I saw Plumpster suggesting Arendse is as good or words suggesting that. No ways, nobody has ever beaten players like Cheslin. Superb under the high ball dispite being so short. He is in a class of his own.
Eben proved 2027 is not a mountain too far.
I kept my eye in Sasha when watching the 4th test. He was very unlucky. Goal kicks just missing, a drop just missing, touch finds just missing a great cross kick to Arendse and he knocks on.
Sasha is versatile he obviously can play fullback and would make a great outside center if needed.
I like AE as a loosie. He is a big lad but fast for his size and could supplement out backs out wide very well. An interest loose trip would be Hanekom at 6 Wiese at eight and AE at 7.
Put in Eben and Lood or Snyman at lock and our front row you then have the ultimate power pack.

The guys who have played a lot especially the older guys should at best be used sparingly. No 80 minute stints for the likes of Eben, Nortje Wiese etc. Allende and Kriel as well.
Hooker is young and should be fine to play.

@Plum not to mention Berhadien who looked bloody good for the SA Schools side and I see the Stormers are chasing the signature of Pead at 9

@Saffolk The difference between you and Mike is that you have players you like and players don't, Dave, and you have your rugby reason for that. Mike's decisions are made by who comes from or has played for WP.

Can't disagree on that.

We don't have many youngsters around that is above 200cm, they are there or under. Riley Norton is being tipped, but he is only 198 cm, young, but not sure he has the physicality or the speed to cover 7. Probably the most likely replacement for PTSD.

Our locks are getting shorter.

Lomp stands at 205 cm and so is RG at 207 cm, Eben at 203 cm

Nortje only 200 cm , Norton 199, Wiese 199 cm

So I think Lock is our most difficult spot to fill, we see how NZ is struggling and it weakens their tight five

Yeah at lock we are looking a little thin when it comes to guys under 25

We have JF v Heerden, Corne Rahl and Riley Norton and that’s it

I like v Heerden and Rahl - both over 2m and over 120kg

It does not help that our two best lock prospects at school of late have been snapped up by French clubs

While our Baby Bok sides over the past 2 years have been really good, the locks at best have looked solid

Were we occupying the same universe during the broadcast? Damian was much the same as he has always been, as was Kriel. Du Toit perhaps looks to have lost a yard or two, but otherwise I saw little that fundamentally altered my assessment of him.

What struck me more was how heavily the Boks still depended upon individual players to manufacture the result. There is an important distinction between possessing dangerous attacking players and possessing a functioning attack. Sacha has extraordinary potential, but I still think much of that talent is being wasted. In truth, our entire backline is being underutilised. Too often we rely upon someone like Sacha, Arendse or Willemse to create something from circumstances in which the system itself has created very little.

That is what makes the continued persistence with Damian and Kriel so difficult for me to understand. They can be accommodated within a successful side, certainly, but I've never regarded either as a genuinely high-quality specialist centre. We have Esterhuizen available, with plenty of rugby still ahead of him, while Am appears to have disappeared almost completely from the conversation. After all these years, I still regard Damian and Kriel largely as placeholders who happened to remain in place.

Despite my longstanding misgivings about Lead-Foot Lood, I'll give him his due here. He carried with enough power and purpose to provide the sort of steady gain-line possession we badly needed. There were periods when we struggled to make a meaningful breach in their half, and those carries at least allowed us to keep nudging the defence backwards rather than simply recycling static possession.

That remains one of my larger concerns with this Bok attack. Possession and phase count are not achievements in themselves. If we're taking six, eight or ten phases to generate the breach that a better attacking shape might create in three, every additional phase presents another opportunity for a handling error, breakdown penalty or defensive turnover. Against better organised defences, sterile possession eventually becomes a liability.

We need to become considerably more incisive. With Sacha, Arendse, Willemse, Esterhuizen and Morné van den Berg among the resources available, there is no good reason for South Africa to depend so heavily upon moments of individual invention. The structure should be creating the space for those players; the players shouldn't continually be rescuing the structure.

So no, the result hasn't suddenly transformed my assessment of the individuals we've spent years debating. It was an excellent Bok victory and there were performances deserving of considerable credit. But a 43-point scoreline shouldn't prevent us from asking how those points were produced, where the attack stalled, and whether this extraordinarily talented group is actually approaching its ceiling.

For me, it isn't — and that's precisely why I'm so demanding of it.

Edit — There was also a pivotal moment in the second half that shouldn't be lost beneath the final scoreline. An All Black was called offside at the ruck, kicked the ball ahead and was subsequently taken out by Morné. The original offside rendered everything that followed academic, but without it we could very easily have been looking at a penalty try and a card, potentially a red. From that point onwards we would have been playing an entirely different Test.

You could also say that had the Kiwis been pinged for some of the stuff they had done the game could have ended even more in SA's advantage.

At least the offside was a clear infringement. So it's not like the call was a bum one and swing the game.

Still crazy that a 9 stripped PSDT easily though. The look on Steph's face was priceless.

I see almost every Kiwi podcast is complaining that the tackle by Hanekom that lead to Arendse's try was early and it changed the game. Never mind the fact that the pass by Dmac was miles forward and would have resulted in a Bok scrum anyway.

It's been great to see the Kiwis complain about the refs. It shows that it's not just a Saffa thing.

@Plum yep we are not going to agree on this - I have always seen the value in DA and know he is playing to a plan

But as I keep saying at 34 it’s time to move on from our current incumbent centres, which will no doubt have to wait till post WC

AE has been extremely unlucky finding himself placed behind DA in the pecking order, which I get but feel for him, given how good he is

Another thing, I have watched all the games back a few times now.

The comfort of knowing the result removes basically all the stress and certainly for games 3 and 4 the Boks were far more dominant than it felt like on first view.

On second view, both those games gave the impression that the Kiwis were hanging on by a thread.
